By the beginning of World War 2, Wollongong Harbour had been superceded by Port Kembla for the transport of coal and other heavy cargo. The local fishing fleet utilised the moorings and a Fishermen's Co-Operaative was built. With the decline of commercial fishing, the harbour increasing became a recreational area. Over the years, there have been many proposals to redevlop the precinct for tourists. Some development has occurred but is increasingly opposed by residents
