There are a number of local museums, societies and organisations dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Illawarra heritage and history. There are also state and national bodies that are concerned with environmental protection including the preservation of historical sites.

Helensburgh and District Historical Society | Waterfall, Garawarra, Stanwell Park, Stanwell Tops, Otford, Lilyvale and Cawley. Old Mine Surgery Museum records coal mining, railways, forestry, education, sport, social clubs, religion and all other aspects of village life. |
