Joe Wah Gow migrated from the village of Long Tou Wan in Guangzhou, China. After an initial stay in Cairns, he came to Wollongong around 1903. He established a successful general store at 347-349 Crown St, Wollongong. Joe and his family returned to his ancestral home in 1929 and died there in 1950. Joe Wah Gow supported many community activities in order to promote his business and help Chinese residents gain acceptance.
