Steelworks Manager’s House - ‘Lindenfells’

Steelworks Manager’s House - ‘Lindenfells’

William Mortlock was appointed manager of the Hoskins Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla in 1927.  An extensive bungalow was built on a hill within the steelworks curtilage in 1929.  The house comprised fifteen rooms with spacious lounge, dining, billiards and card rooms. Every modern equipment is provided with an all electric service, electricity being used for cooking, washing, hot water service and refrigeration. The house is completely shut off from the works by a belt of trees, but the lounge has a commanding view of the town of Wollongong. [Illawarra Mercury 20 Dec 1929 p15]

The house was subsequently provided with a tennis court, indoor swimming pool and extensive gardens. General managers of the Steelworks lived in the house until the early 2000s.
