MUNDY,  Louisa Catherine Georgina [1809-1904]

Louisa Catherine Georgina Herbert was born at Mitcham, England on 17 December 1809  to the Reverend William Herbert and his wife, Letitia Emily Dorothea Allen.  Through her father she was a granddaughter of the first Earl of Carnarvan and of the second Earl of Egremont.  She was a great-granddughter of the eight Earl of Pembroke.  Her mother was a daughter of the fifth Viscount Allen.  Louisa's father was appointed Dean of Manchester in 1840. 

Following her father's death in 1847, Miss Louisa Herbert and servant arrived in Sydney on the Sir Edward Paget on 25 May 1848.  Twelve dsys latter, she married Lieutenant-Colonel Goodfrey Charles Munday.  Godfrey had arrived in Sydney in 1846 as Deputy Adjudant-General of mikitary forces in Austrlia.  He was a cousin of the then Governor of NSW, Sir Charles Fitzroy and had close family ties to noble families and senior military commanders.

Louisa and Godfrey made various tours around eastern Australia and New Zealand before returning to England in 1851.  During their tours, both Louisa and Godfrey sketched scenes they witnessesed.  Godfrey published Our Antipodes: or, Residence and Rambles in the Australasian Colonies. With a Glimpse of the Gold Fields.in 1852.  The publication included sketches by Godfrey and at least two by Louisa showng scenes in Illawarra.

Godfrey died in 1860 after serving in the War Office during the CRimean War and as Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey from 1857 until his death.  Louisa died in 1904.
