FLEMING, ALEC

Alec [Alexander Patrick] Fleming attended the inaugural meeting of the Illawarra Historical Society in December 1944.  He served as secretary from 1944 to 1949. Alec held the position of treasuer during three periods totalling more than a decade.  He was president in 1960-1961 and elected patron in 1975.

As well as being an office bearer, Alec addressed meetings of the Society on a range of topics many of which were published as booklets. He was biorn and raised in the coalfields of the Hunter Valley and worked in Newcastle and Wollongong mostly as an acciuntant with Australian Iron and Steel then owned by BHP.
