When the town of Wollongong was surveyed in 1834, Crown St divided the Private Town located on land granted to Charles Throsby Smith from the Government Town subdivision to the south. The thoroughfare became the principal location of hotels, shops and businesses as the town expanded and the focus moved away from Market Square.
