The area covered by the suburbs of Cringila and Lake Heights straddle a ridge which runs east-west from the Pacific Ocean toward the Illawarra Escarpment. Formerly part of the Dharawal domain, the land was alienated in 1816 in favour of David Allen. The land grant was subsequently owned by the Wentworth family who gradually subdivided it from about 1908 until the 1960s. Early residents tended to be associated with the heavy industries located at Port Kembla.
