The alignment of Church St was determined when the Private Town of Wollongong was surveyed in 1834. It runs north to south and began originally at Smith St and terminated at Burelli [or Barella] St. The street was named after a square of land at the junction of Church and Market Streets that was reserved for a Church of England. Church St was extend north to Bourke St in 1878 when land belonging to Charles Throsby Smith was subdivided. The street was extended south to Swan St.
