Inglebah Guesthouse was located at 8 Smith St, Wollongong.  In its heighday, Inglebah was one of the premier lodging houses in Wollongong. Guesthouses catered for visiting businessmen such as commercial travellers, tourists and provided temporary accommodation for people such as school teachers, bank staff and railway employees transferred to Wollongong.  Some guesthouses also accommodated older single residents who preferred not to maintain their own homes.

 

1879 - William Hayes purchased the land during the sale of lots north of Smith St when Charles Throsby Smith's estate was being finalised [Illawarra Mercury. 17 Jan 1879 p2]

1902 - William Hayles was the shipping agent for the Mt Pleasant Mine [Illawarra Mercury. 12 Nov 1902 p2]

1916 - death of Doreen Kate Hayles, widow of William Hayles at Inglebah [Illawarra Mercury 27 Jun 1916 p2]

1917 - sold to Mrs E M James - a two story residence and land in Smith St the estate of the late William Hayles. [Illawarra Mercury 18 May 1917 p9]

1921 - W James advertised the sale of furniture from Inglebah . [Illawarra Mercury. 10 Jun 1921 p2]

1923 - sale of furniture from the Inglebah Flats by Mrs J J Cleary prepartory to re-opening as a boarding house. [Illawarra Mercury 27 Jul 1923 p2]

1923 - Mrs J J Cleary opened Inglebah 'as a select boarding establishment for 6 permanent boarders [Illawarra Mercury 5 Oct 1923 p9]

1925 - Carel Ledebur, X-ray and Electro-therapeutist offering treatments at Inglebah [Illawarra Mercury 15 May 1925 p10]

1929 - Mrs Corvisy the proprietor of Inglebah Guesthouse hosted an improptu ball [Illawarra Mercury 11 Jan 1929 p15]

1931 - Inglebah ladies tennis tornament held [Illawarra Mercury 7 Nov 1931 p10]  The court was used throughout the Depression  years

1933 - Catholic Depating Society met at Inglebah - Mrs Corvisy proprietor [Illawarra Mercury 9 Jun 1933 p12]

1934 - a 21st birthday party was held for Miss A Fredericks in the Inglebah hall [Illawarra Mercury 21 Sep 1934 p5]
