DAPTO SMELTERS
The earliest heavy industry in the Illawarra district was at Kanahooka where the Smelting Co of Australia Ltd established a metal refinging works. The plant operated from 1897 to about 1908 plagued by the lack of harbour facilities, difficulties acquiring raw materials economically and poor coal supplies.
